Parks & Recreation

A Brief History of Recreation in Brandon Township...
In the year 2000, the Brandon Township Board of Trustees officially established a small governmental entity dedicated to providing our community with quality recreational programming. The creation of Brandon Township Recreation enabled the consolidation of several recreational groups that had previously operated independently within the community, including the former Brandon-Groveland-Ortonville Recreation Commission. In 2001, the Brandon Township Board hired the township's first Recreation Programmer. In 2005, Brandon Township acquired property designated specifically for park development. Known today as Brandon Township Parks & Recreation, the department provides our community with an accessible, accountable, and centralized entity responsible for the administration of local recreational programming. Brandon Township Parks & Recreation employees are personally dedicated to organizing year-round instructional and recreational programming for participants of all ages and abilities.
The Role of Recreation
Brandon Township Parks & Recreation is responsible for processing thousands of program and event registrations every year for the families of our community. The department also organizes and hosts a number of family-oriented special events such as dances, festivals, parades, bus excursions, overnight trips and more. Many indoor programming options are made possible through ongoing cooperative scheduling efforts between Brandon Township Parks & Recreation and Brandon School District. Active membership in the Michigan Recreation and Park Association (MRPA) enables the community to enjoy free events like the state-wide Pitch, Hit & Run competition as well as allowing Brandon Township Parks & Recreation the ability to offer discounted admission tickets to several area theme parks.
Fundraising for Park Development
The recreation department is committed to furthering development of Brandon Township Community Park. Brandon Township Parks & Recreation staffers wrote and remitted nearly a dozen grant applications from 2006-2008. Five of these applications collectively earned more than $95,000 in matching state park development funding. Brandon Township Parks & Recreation is grateful for the individuals, businesses and organizations that have provided support integral to the township’s recreational mission over the years. The Ortonville Rotary Club deserves special mention for administering the Brandon Township Build a Park Club and collecting over $10,000 in park development donations from over 120 local families and businesses. The Brandon All-Sports Boosters generously donated $10,000, and the Brandon Junior Blackhawks organization donated $1000 towards park development, as well. In addition, Brandon Township Parks & Recreation gratefully acknowledges those in our community who manage to find time in their busy schedules to support recreational activities. We are thankful for each and every one of these very special individuals.
